If you have a baby, it’s easy to get caught up in all the little tiny clothes excitement, or happy planning, to think about what YOU will need to survive those early mum days. Sure, endless nappies, muslins and patience are a must; but that’s for dealing with this new little human. Everyone will shower you in gifts for baby, but not enough of us think about treating ourselves (or asking others to!). You’ve just gone through nine months of pregnancy, and then gone through the hell of labour… and now your every waking moment is focused on someone else. I’d say any new mum deserves to feel good about herself in any way she can.
So for me, there have been two big things that have made me feel more like myself in the past few months since River was born. Staying creative, and pampering myself. Now, I’m not saying I’ve had the chance for glorious bubble baths every night or whisking myself away to a spa (HA HA, I wish); but there are little tiny things each day that have made me feel glorious amidst all the poop explosions.
So today I thought I’d share my five fave beauty essentials, as a new mum. These are the things that have made me look and feel much better, even on sleep deprived days. I thoroughly suggest you get your own versions if you’re expecting, OR put together a cute little hamper for a friends who is due to be a mamma soon!
1. An all in one moisturiser
There will be days when you don’t have time or energy for makeup (almost everyday for me!), but that doesn’t mean you should neglect your skin. I’m a huge fan of Superdrug’s Calm Skin Hydrating 2-in-1 Serum & Moisturiser – because it does everything all in one go! This little baby is such a bargain price, and it really makes my skin feel nourished and healthy after every use. I’ve found myself stroking my face hours afterwards, because it really does leave it super smooth, and it brightens you even on the dullest of skin days.
2. A face mask
At the end of a very hectic day looking after a little one, there’s nothing I like more than totally cleansing my face and getting rid of every last bit of grubbiness with a face mask. When you’re regularly dealing with urine, poo, and sick – it’s not a bad idea to pamper yourself and feel like a queen again (even if it’s just for a few short hours). I like Dirty Works Detox Mud Mask as it doesn’t leave my skin feeling too tight, and it hydrates and nourishes it with every use. I use this once a week, and I’ve noticed it helps clear the pores on my nose which is a problem area for me!
Ahhh my favourite makeup product (probably). Highlighter has the ability to send you from dull to DELIGHTFUL in one quick sweep of the cheekbones. The brighter the better, IMO. At the moment I’m totally addicted to Stila ‘Opulence’ Heaven’s Hue Highlighter, as a little bit goes a long way and the creamy, silvery shimmer is perfect for pale skin. Whenever I’m having a bad ‘mum day’ (aka feeling rough and not having a moment to myself) – this little baby makes me feel like a princess again! MUST HAVE.
4. Hand cream
I’ve always been a fan of hand cream, since being an Artist puts my hands through a lot. Keeping them soft, nourished and looked after is even more important now that I have a baby though. I find I’m washing my hands more than ever, due to nappy changes, bottle making, and just generally making sure they’re super clean while dealing with a small baby. But that much washing means your hands can get dried out, so look after them with a great cream. I’ve always been a huge fan of The Body Shop’s Strawberry hand cream, but I’ve fan out – boo! So for now I’m using Rose & Co Hand Cream. It’s really nice, smells great, and leaves me feeling soft. It’s cheaper than The Body Shop, however I’d totally pick The Body Shop every time and I do think it’s worth it, so that’s what I’d recommend!
A pop of colour on the lips makes me personally feel like a million bucks, no matter the day I’m having. Even if I’m not leaving the house, it can make the difference between feeling like a slob, and feeling like I’m totally rocking this mum thing. Go with what you love most; whether thats a liquid lipstick, a balm, or lipgloss. For me, I personally love NYX soft matte lip creams, because they have so many colour choices, the price is great, and they last ALL DAY. Winner! Favourite shades include Sydney, Antwerp and Seoul.
Above all, remember to give yourself a pat on the back for surviving motherhood, especially in the early days!
