If you need a locksmith urgently then the chances are that you are not in the best situation. Maybe you are locked out of your house late at night or stranded outside your office in the pouring rain. You will need to find a locksmith based in Birmingham (or wherever you are stranded) that offers emergency services and can get to you quickly so you can be on your way. However, if you never called a locksmith before then you might be a little unsure of the procedure you need to follow and how best to go about it – well here is our guide on what to do if you find yourself in need of a locksmith.
First – make sure that you actually need a locksmith.
This might seem like an obvious one but if you are feeling panicked or exhausted then it is perfectly normal to possibly overreact to your situation and call out a locksmith when it is not necessary. If you are locked out of your house you should first consider all your other options and any other methods that you could use to get in without needing to call out a locksmith.
Is there someone who could bring you a key or somewhere you can go to collect a spare set? Maybe you could stop at your neighbour’s until your partner comes home with their key. You may even be able to get in through an open door or window somewhere. If you do call a locksmith then they will likely charge you a call-out fee regardless of whether they were actually needed, so think about it carefully and do not let your panic get the better of you.
Make sure you are in a secure location
If you are locked out at night or in a secluded area where you feel unsafe then get yourself to a secure location where you can wait for the locksmith. Your safety is the most important thing but try to stay within sight and do not go too far from the meeting point so the locksmith is not wandering around looking for you. Get somewhere well-lit, where you have a good view of your surroundings and make sure someone knows that you are stranded at your location.
Find a local locksmith
If you have called out a locksmith before then you may have a particular person or company in mind but you should consider where you are – in an emergency situation, proximity and availability are the most important things. Find the closest service to you with an available locksmith who can make it out to you as quickly as you need them. Consider whether it might be quicker to get someone to come out to you with a spare key.
Tell the locksmith exactly what you need
Communicate as much information to them as possible over the phone, if the situation is a little more complicated than a lock-out situation then they may need to bring specific tools. So be sure to explain the situation as much as possible so they can be prepared for the job.
