There comes a time when either your job changes or your needs do. This is when you need to start thinking about changing things up. It can be quite intimidating to think about taking on a new career since you have been doing something else for a long time. If you are well prepared for the change then things will go much more smoothly than if you jump in blind. 1 – Update your skills

You may have a skill set that you have honed through the years in your current career that may help you in the new one. However, things change and best practices now may be different than they were in the past. This means that it’s important to update your skills before you decide to make a change. 

When you are looking through the various resume templates you will want to pick one that is going to be easy to update with some more information that you should be putting together in the way of new skills. Your resume should impress the hiring manager so anything that is new and relevant is going to help you.

2 – Ask a professional

There may not be a set way to go about getting a new career, but there are generally going to be some steps to take to position yourself well to get hired. This is why it is important to get some professional help so you aren’t making the wrong moves. 

There are career counselors out there that can help you figure out the best way to proceed in the best way. They can advise you on the steps you should take and in what order. There may be some kind of boot camp that you were thinking of joining only to find that they think you would waste time and should do something else instead. 

3 – Start networking

At least a few months before you decide to make the switch, you need to start building out a solid network of people related to the new career you are going for. Join some groups or some local meetups to mingle with people who work in that field or will help you with the skills needed to work in it. 

You will make connections with people who can guide you since they already have experience and know how things work. Some of them might even be there to recommend you for a job when their company is hiring.
